Like all humans each of us has an adventurous spirit, some like to travel across the ocean on a yacht where as others prefer to soak in the scenery on a epic hiking trail.
Hiking in Hermanus along the Fernkloof Nature Reserve trail is a wonderful experience, there are few places in the world that offer such magnificent views and such diverse wildlife.

Torres del Paine Circuit, Chile
Torres del Paine was declared a biosphere reserve by the UNESCO in 1978. The trail has immaculate views of the surrounding peaks and there is an option to camp near the glacier grey and lake of the same name.
When to go: December to January as the sun only sets at around 10pm, March is also a good time to go as it is the warmest time of year with little to no rain.
Difficulty: You do not require a guide for this trail and all skill levels will be able to manage.
Things to know: There are a few luxury lodges that offer guided walks, that is if you have the money. For those on a budget pack a tent.
Appalachian Trail, USA
The trail extends from Georgia to Maine and is 3,500 KM long, with many hikers attempting to hike the entire route in one season. Hikers can spot bears, elk, deer and moose.
When to go: The best time to tackle this trail will be in the US summer and spring time. Starting in the north as you will have warmer weather and working your way down south.
Difficulty: There are many trails all of varying difficulty, consult with guides and guide books to see what terrain you will be tackling.
Things to know: Certain sections might be muddy due to the rain and thus will have quite a few mosquitoes around, pack your peaceful sleep!
Mount Kilimanjaro to Marangu
Mount Kilimanjaro is actually a dormant volcano and the highest mountain in Africa as well as the highest free standing mountain in the world.
When to go: From March till May is the rainy season so avoid going at that time. The mountain peaks are quite chilly throughout the year and wearing the right clothing is a must.
Difficulty: You will have to train in order to hike Mount Kilimanjaro. It is a steep climb and you run the risk of getting altitude sickness. Guides are required!
Things to know: Marangu is the most sought after path to hike, you will see plenty of fellow hikers tackling the mountain.
Annapurna Circuit, Nepal
This hike is considered the best in the world. The trail passes through Buddhist holy villages and Hindu holy sites. Hikers will also pass through the oldest monastery in the region.
When to go: The peaks are beautiful but to really see them at their finest it is recommended that you go in October as the skies are clearer and the temperature mild.
Difficulty: It takes roughly 3 weeks to complete, bear in mind that some of the highest points are up to over 5,000 meters.
Things to know: Trail permits are required and can be purchased in Kathmandu. You can find accommodation at any one of the many tea houses scattered along the route.
The Inca Trail, Peru
The trail is located in the Andes mountain range. Hikers can experience the best of both worlds, the snow capped Andes and the Amazon jungle. Experts believe the Inca civilization created this path 5 centuries ago as a holy pilgrimage.
When to go: The trail is closed in February and the recommended time to go is during the warmer seasons falling between April and October.
Difficulty: The walk is gradual, not strenuous as a steep mountain climb. Completion of the trail will take about 4 days.
Things to know: As the trail is 4000 meters high it is recommended that you stop and rest to acclimatize and avoid contracting altitude sickness. A guide is a must and the trail does have entrance fees. Various hiking packages for the trail include this in their price but double check to make sure that everything is in order. As the trail is very popular is is advised that you get the pass early on as the amount of hikers allowed is controlled.
