De Mond Nature Reserve
There are many scenic hiking trails in the Overberg to explore, some of the most beautiful hiking routes can be found in the De Mond Nature Reserve. The reserve is home to grysbok, steenbok, grey duiker, caracal and plenty of birdlife. The various hiking trails will guide you along coastline, over dunes and through milkwood forests.
The reserve is home to two hiking routes and they are namely:
Sterna Hiking Trail:
Distance: 7KM
Duration: 3 hours
Description: This circular hiking route will guide you through the De Mond Nature Reserve and over the Heuningnes River by way of a suspended bridge. You will eventually find yourself back on the beach and you can head in the direction of the estuary.
Notes: Cars are only allowed as far as the parking area and no further.
De Mond To Arniston Trail:
Distance: Undirectional trek
Duration: 4 hours
Description: This coastal trail runs past the Waenhuiskrans Cave, fish traps and old middens that were once used by the Khoisan.
Regulations:
- Do not disturb the birds
- Stick to the designated pathways
- Do not trample the vegetation
- Booking is required
- Canoeing is not permitted
- Access to the reserve is between 07:00 and 16:00 daily.
- Fresh water fishing license and fishing permit is required.
