Hiking In The Overberg | The Perlemoen Trail

Perlemoen Trail

The Perlemoen trail lies along one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world, namely Walker Bay with its world-renowned land and boat-based whale watching, shark cage diving in Gansbaai (Great White Capital Of The World) and rolling hills of fynbos.

The trail is for the young at heart, looking for adventure in hidden parts of the world. There are wide-open spaces, dunes, stretches of white beach and limestone caves to explore.

For leisure and serious walkers!

The Route:

Duration: 3 to 5 days

Trail type: Slackpacking Trail

Terrain: Moderate

Itinerary:

Day 1 – 15 KM – De Dam to Buffelsjag

(An extra 7KM can be added for those wanting to hike to Pearly Beach.)

Day 2 – 12KM – Franskraal

(An extra 3KM can be added for those wanting to hike to Kleinbaai.)

Day 3 –  8KM – Die Plaat and caves

* For the avid hikers a fourth and fifth day can be added with an adrenaline-fuelled boat trip to Dyer Island or a trip to the Platbos Forest as well as a quad bike ride up to the top of Franskraal Mountain. There are extra options that include shark cage diving, a visit to local wine estates and a visitation to a perlemoen farm.

The Perlemoen Trail

The first day of the hiking trail will be along the rocky outline of the coast with lunch at Buffelsjag. In the hotter season you are invited to have a dip in the tidal pools along the beach. Celebrate the completion of your hike with a ice cold beer and hearty potjie kos at the Pearly Beach B&B.

On day two you have the chance to spot whales and dolphins cavorting in the bay. Spot the endangered black oyster catcher and other bird life. Further on you will stop in at the Strandveld museum, home to shipwreck trinkets and haunting stories of the Birkenhead.

Day three will see you stop in at De Kelders, the limestone caves and the beaches of Die Plaat.

One of the most striking hiking trails on the planet!
