Hiking in the Fernkloof Nature Reserve, Hermanus

There are very few places in the world that offer hikers the opportunity to experience changing scenery, wildlife and plant life like that of the Fernkloof Nature Reserve. Hiking in Hermanus and the Overberg is definitely a must!

Overview:

Fernkloof Nature Reserve offers hikers a choice of 60kms of graded walks and trails that can accommodate people of all fitness levels, no huffing, and puffing! From Aasvoelkop in the north to Piet se Bos on the Cliff Path in the south, paths take you up mountains, down valleys, and alongside the coast.

From most vantage points there are magnificent mountain views, sea views, views of Walker Bay and its visiting whale population (June to December). Further views include that of the Hemel en Aarde Valley and Maanskynbaai.

There are four colour-coded trails, which are clearly marked by signboards and colour-coded markers on the ground. All trails start and end at the Visitor Centre.

There are guided tours on offer and can be arranged at a fee. There are plenty of trails to choose from, suiting young and old.

Directions:

Follow the Hermanus Main Road/R43 towards Voelklip. Turn left into Fir Avenue (just before the Voelklip traffic circle). Keep going straight until you reach the main entrance of the Fernkloof Nature Reserve. Continue along the narrow tarred road until you reach the Visitor Centre.
