The Bot River Wine Route
Welcome to the warmest and loving wineries of Bot River
Clustered at the foot of the Houwhoek Pass near Hermanus, the wine farms that make up the Bot River ward of South Africa’s Walker Bay Wine District add distinct appeal to one of the Western Cape’s most sought-after wine growing regions.
Wine tasting in Botrivier and along the Bot River Wine Route is a must for all those seeking an adventure paired with a delectable glass of wine. The warm-hearted wineries of Bot River are known to have the character of the wine farmers themselves: down-to-earth and sociable.
The wine makers wines are their first passion and it shows in each bottle. Bot River wines have been awarded several five-star accolades by Platter and a host of awards in various other competitions and shows.
The Chenin Blanc cultivar is the star of the Bot River valley: wines coaxed from old, characterful, low-yield vines produce internationally acclaimed, award-winning vintages year after year.
Sauvignon Blanc follows suit, with Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and small quantities of Chardonnay, Pinotage, Mourvédre, and Verdelho completing the Bot River Wine profile.
Within the 10km radius of the Bot River Valley, the wine traveller can experience real country hospitality and taste wines made from the oldest vines in the Walker Bay region as well as the latest, most innovative varietals from new plantings.
From historic and traditional wineries to the most modern, state-of-the-art cellars, the common denominators are a warm welcome, handcrafted, top quality wines; a commitment to biodiversity and the desire to share hours of sociable sipping with fellow wine lovers.
“From the top of the Houw Hoek Pass, one gets the first glimpse of the vast, rolling hills and big sky of the Bot River area, where “real people make real wine”.” Bot River Winegrowers Association.
