Activities And Attractions In Riviersonderend

This small farming community in the Overberg is home to rolling countryside and panoramic mountains.

Due to the hamlet’s close vicinity to raw, unspoiled nature, there are plenty of things to do in Riviersonderend.

Nature lovers delight…

Chicken PieFor those looking for a bite to eat head straight to the Ou Meul Bakery in the heart of town. They serve the finest pastries you can think of. Their country-style pies made with various fillings like steak and chicken and mushroom are flaky, warm and irresistible. Definitely a must!

Work the pie off by popping into the Riviersonderend photo museum. Here you will see how the town grew since it’s settlement up and till now, a sure eye-opener.

Blue CraneBird watchers are encouraged to stop along the way and seek out the endangered blue cranes, normally found in the open fields surrounding the town. Remember to pack your binoculars.

Kloofing in Riviersonderend in a popular adrenalin-fuelled sport for beginners and advanced visitors alike. The Riviersonderend kloofing trail is excellent for beginners, the highest jump is only 7m, the jumps can be done lower down if this height is uncomfortable for you. The 15KM trail will take Kloofingroughly 8 to 9 hours to complete and is quite tough.

Suicide Gorge as the name suggest is not for the faint-hearted. The trail demands knuckle busting jumps, scrambling down cliff faces and swimming through a wonderful canyon, dotted with waterfalls. You are required to be fit and healthy in order to partake in this sport and fit for the hike. The lowest leap is 7 meters and the highest 14 meters. The route is 17 KM long and will take roughly 8 to 9 hours to complete.

FynbosHikers and wildlife enthusiasts can visit the Grootvadersbosch Nature Reserve. One will find a mix of hiking trails to meander along, keep your eyes out for the wild bushbuck that roam this 14 000 hectare, world heritage.

The Kleinbergie trail is a mild, circular 4.4KM hiking path. This trail is perfect if you are looking to amble along and savour the countryside.

The Riviersonderend conservation area makes up 69 Bushbuck000 hectares of state land and private property that has been declared as a mountain catchment site. There are forests, hidden areas, and gorges to explore. 

For the wild at heart, there are numerous 4×4 and 4×2 trails to concur with. There are courses that will keep even the most advanced on their toes. The tracks are manageable when dry but bear in mind that when wet the conditions change. Low range, ground clearance, and diff lock are essential. There is a section which is an option only if you have a winch, Dirty Jeepotherwise, all in all, the various routes provide a great adventure out in the mountains.

Avid golfers are asked to take note as there is a golf course in Riviersonderend. The 9 hole, 72 par course costs between R60 and R80 to access for a days’ fun!

Though you have to provide your own equipment it is suggested that you bring along your fishing, swimming, kayaking/canoeing, and boating gear and enjoy the most well Golfknown landmark in town the Riviersonderend!
