Legacy Martial Arts Academy in Hermanus once again stood out at the prestigious annual Overberg District Sports Council Sports Awards, a celebrated event hosted by the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport.
This remarkable academy clinched an impressive total of seven awards, a testament to their unwavering dedication and outstanding achievements.
These awards, a hallmark event in the sporting calendar, serve to recognize and honor the remarkable contributions of sport administrators, technical officials, coaches, referees, umpires, athletes, and sportswomen in the district. Furthermore, they shine a spotlight on the exceptional performances and accomplishments of various sports federations in the region.
At the heart of Legacy Martial Arts Academy (LMAA) is Shihan Ruehan van Romburgh, a dedicated leader who not only leads LMAA but also serves as the President of the Overberg Kickboxing Association. Under his guidance, LMAA was named the Recreational Body of the Year, a testament to their commitment to fostering a spirit of recreation and sportsmanship. Additionally, the Overberg Kickboxing Association, under his stewardship, was honored with the prestigious Federation of the Year award.
Van Romburgh, whose coaching prowess has been acknowledged for the second consecutive year, expressed immense pride in his students. One standout achiever is Chélene Kreusch, recognized with the esteemed President’s Acknowledgement Award in appreciation of her exceptional accomplishments in kickboxing. Several other students also emerged victorious in various categories, showcasing the academy’s talent and dedication to excellence.
Namika Pieterse, a prominent athlete who represented South Africa at the African Kickboxing Championships in 2022, was once again bestowed with the title of School Sportswoman of the Year at the Overberg District Sports Awards. Her remarkable achievement in 2022 marked a milestone as she secured this title for the first time.
The academy’s achievements continued with Kayden Pool, who was honored with the Newcomer of the Year title. Dylan Isaacs showcased his outstanding skills, earning him the Junior Sportsman of the Year award, while Gareth Cupido’s exceptional performance led to his recognition as the Senior Sportsman of the Year.
Kayden Pool’s talent was recognized across three different categories – Newcomer of the Year, Junior Sportsman, and School Sportsman of the Year. Zius Brand earned a nomination in the Newcomer of the Year category, and Dylan Isaacs and Aidan Brummer were finalists in the School and Junior Sportsman of the Year categories. Brummer, in particular, clinched the Newcomer of the Year as well as the School Sportsman of the Year awards in 2022.
Noteworthy mentions go to Devine January and Gareth Cupido, who were shortlisted in the Senior Sportsman of the Year category, and Zanru Fraser, who earned recognition in the Senior Sportswoman of the Year category.
The accolade winners are eagerly anticipating the grand finale – the Western Cape Provincial Sports Awards, scheduled to take place in Cape Town on 21 October. This recognition stands as a testament to the dedication, talent, and sportsmanship fostered by Legacy Martial Arts Academy, showcasing their status as a true powerhouse in the realm of martial arts and sportsmanship in the Overberg District.
