Ridding paddavlei of plastic
Everyone helped with the cleaning session. Hawston Primary School, Expanded Public Works Programme, Overstrand Municipality’s Environmental Management team, Pearly Shells Senior Centre as well as the Overstrand Association of People with Disabilities in Hawston, helped in getting Paddavlei plastic free.
On Tuesday 5 June residents of Hawston had a clean-up session at the Paddavlei Wetlands in Hawston, to celebrate World Environmental Day.
The theme for this year’s World Environmental Day was “Beating Plastic Pollution”.
An environmental exhibition was held at the Thusong Centre, where people were informed about the conservation agencies of the Overstrand and about the products and services that they render.
Thereafter the teams set off to the Paddavlei Wetlands to start their clean-up initiative.
Here are a few tips on how to contribute towards a better and cleaner future:
•Let us get into the habit of carrying reusable shopping bags with us.
• Let us keep litter off the beaches and out of the ocean by thinking twice before using plastic straws.
• Be mindful of where cigarette butts are thrown.
