Family event makes for great training
Cyclists will depart from Danger Point lighthouse in Gansbaai on Saturday 23 February at 07:00, and ride to the L’Agulhas Lighthouse at the southernmost tip of Africa.
Day One is 118 km with 1 200 m ascent. The new improved route will take riders on scenic routes along the beach, through open plains and through some wooded kloofs.
The sandy, rutted tracks of the past have been ditched for faster off-road tracks.
Riders will camp out at Cape Agulhas, where their families, friends and supporters can join them. Lots of cool spot prizes will also be up for grabs during the campout.
The riders will start the shorter 93 km return route, back to Danger Point, early the next morning.
In addition to its own unique community and family-based flavour, the L2L is the ideal training ride for those who have entered endurance events to take place later in the year. If training for the Cape Epic, for example, this is the perfect event to fine-tune their endurance over non-technical yet challenging terrain. It is also a step-up for those cyclists who want to tackle a bigger challenge than a one-day endurance event, or for cyclists looking to tackle the ultra-long distance events later in the year.
Riders could enter as individuals or two-person teams but entries are closed for this year. There are no on-the-day late entries.
Free transport will be available for riders’ luggage to L’Agulhas Caravan Park and back to Danger Point. Saturday overnight stay is free of charge.
The event, hosted by The Lions of Gansbaai, has been running for 18 years, all the proceeds going to charitable projects in the Southern Cape.
