Endurance walk not for the faint hearted
Stretch your legs, fill your water bottles and put on your comfiest walking shoes for the Ewasa South Africa Championship Endurance Walk 2019.
The event is hosted by the Overberg Police Cluster.
Participants in the two-day 75 km endurance walk will set off from Gansbaai Sports Grounds on Friday 8 March at 07:00. On the first day, they will walk 40 km.
On the second day, athletes will depart from Helshoogte Farm at 07:00 for the 35 km walk back to the sports grounds. It is expected that the athletes will start arriving at the sports grounds from 11:30.
Captain Fadila September, the spokesperson for Hermanus Police, says more than 30 teams from across the country are expected to take part in the event.
“The Overberg Cluster Commander, Brigadier Donovan Heilbron, invites the community to come and support the walkers on the day,” she stated.
September says the sport contributes to the Police Fitness Policies and is also used to develop teams from local schools who will participate in the walk.
“There will be various activities on the day including displays by the Police band, Air Wing and Special Forces. The Deputy Minister of Sport and Recreation, Overstrand Mayor Coenie Groenewald, and the Police Commissioner General Jula will also be in attendance. Community members are encouraged to come and spend the day and bring the children and see what the police has to offer,” she added.
There will also be other sporting events such as soccer and netball at the sports grounds.
The entry fee for participants in the walk is R260 per team of six members or R60 per individual. Registration will take place on 7 March from 12:00 (noon) at the Gansbaai Sport Grounds.
Athletes can enter in the following categories:
– Senior (up to 39 years)
– Veteran (40 – 49 years)
– Masters (50 years +)
-Junior Development Category – 2nd day / 35 km Schools
People can also enter the 10 km Fun Walk which starts at the Gansbaai Sports Grounds on Saturday 9 March at 07:00. Entry is R20.
