Caledon Hotel Awards Bursaries
The Caledon Casino, Hotel & Spa has awarded bursaries at an estimated value of R300 000 to five students from the Overberg area as part of its 2012 Bursary Programme. This is the forth year that the casino has presented bursaries to young local people.
Amongst the beneficiaries this year is Tamsynne Barlow who is a sixth year medical student at the University of Stellenbosch. The other candidates are Andre Theunissen who is in the second year of a Bachelor of Education degree at Cape Town Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT); Miche Wentzel who is in the first year of a Bachelor’s degree in Tourism at the University of the Western Cape; Simone Pieterse who studying towards a National Diploma in Event Management at CPUT, and Stephan de Jager who is in his third year of studying towards a National Diploma in Financial Management at CPUT: Wellington.
“Every parent knows that providing for a child’s tertiary education is expensive and for many, it is unaffordable. Ensuring that your child is able to take their studies further usually comes with enormous sacrifice.
“The Caledon Casino, Hotel & Spa recognises this and is pleased to once again be in a position to present study bursaries to deserving students as part of our ongoing corporate social responsibility programme. With our contribution, these young people can rest assured that the costs of their studies for the year are covered, and they can focus on their work,” says the casino’s General Manager, Paul Campbell.
The Caledon Casino, Hotel & Spa begins the selection process in November each year, publishing a call to young people to submit bursary applications in all the local community papers in the Overberg area.
The resort only considers applications from people who live in or matriculated from schools in the Overberg region. The candidates must have a 100% success rate at a tertiary institution or at Grade 12 high school level. Submissions are scrutinised and finalists undergo interviews with the bursary panel.
“Of course, our aim is to ensure that we award bursaries to people who are serious about their studies,” says Campbell. Having sailed through the selection process, the five beneficiaries for 2012 were notified of their success and invited to the Caledon Hotel on the 12th of January 2012 to receive their confirmation letters and enjoy a motivational talk.
“We congratulate our beneficiaries on being selected and wish them every success for the year ahead,” concludes Campbell.
