Abalone cash confiscated
Abalone to the value of R1,2 million was confiscated. The Overberg Rural Flying Squad arrested a one suspect last week for being in possession of thousands of abalone with an estimated value of R1,2 million.
Warrant Officer Kobus Jafta, commander of the Overberg Rural Flying Squad, reports that officers were patrolling the N2 between Caledon and Riviersonderend when they received information about a white Volvo allegedly transporting a large shipment of abalone.
“They pulled the vehicle off in Caledon,” he stated.
“In the vehicle, they found 2 929 units of abalone. The driver resisted arrest.”
The 29-year-old suspect appeared in the Caledon Magistrates’ Court on charges of resisting arrest and the illegal possession of abalone. The investigation continues.
In a separate incident near Swellendam, Flying Squad members also took a man into custody, who was found in possession of R181 000 in cash.
“The suspect was taken into custody when he could not provide a reasonable explanation for being in possession of such a large amount of cash,” Jafta explained. “The money was confiscated.
“An inquiry docket was opened and the man will have to appear in court to prove that the money is his and wasn’t received through illegal means.
