Strange Beauty Treatments From Around The World
You Did What!?
Pop into anyone of the fine beauty salons in Hermanus and you are bound to find the run of the mill treatments such as manicures, pedicures and facials.
There are however beauty establishments all over the world that offer treatments leaning more towards the downright bizarre and even gross. Let us have a look at how some people are pampering themselves.
Japan
Treatment: Fish pedicure
How it works: Simply slip off your shoes and place them into a tank filled with tiny fish. These little fish nibble at your toes and feet, removing dead skin cells. The result is super smooth feet! Don’t worry though, it does not hurt, it is however very ticklish.
California
Treatment: Snakeskin pedicure
How it works: For over R3000 you can have real snakeskin placed on your toenails. We will rather settle for some nail art instead.
Czech Republic
Treatment: Beer bath
How it works: Beer contains hops and yeast which are both natural exfoliants and crammed full of vitamins. Soak in a beer bath jacuzzi and you will sweat out all the toxins. Husbands will probably see this as a complete waste of good beer!
Hawaii
Treatment: Bird poop facials
How it works: Kabuki actors and geisha’s have praised the properties found in nightingale bird droppings. It apparently boosts radiance and repairs skin. The droppings are treated with UV, killing all the bacteria before it gets used for a facial. Thank goodness!
China
Treatment: Cupping massage
How it works:The Chinese believe that by heating small cups and placing them along your spine it will rebalance your energy. The cup acts as a vacuum, aiding your body to release built up stress and anxiety.
USA
Treatment: Chocolate massage
How it works: Did you know chocolate is filled with antioxidants which make people feel happy and good about themselves. Incorporating a much loved treat like this makes visiting the spa a whole lot more inviting!
Russia
Treatment: Platza treatment
How it works: Oak leaf branches are stripped down and thwarted against your bare back. The whole idea is that it stimulates blood flow while it buffs your skin. After the “smacking” your back is drenched in cold water to invigorate the senses. Eina!
I think we would rather settle for a French manicure and a Swedish massage any day!
