Two teenage kickboxers from the Legacy Martial Arts Academy are set to represent South Africa at the World Association of Kickboxing Organizations (WAKO) Youth World Championship in Budapest, Hungary. Both have already proven their prowess on the national stage, earning titles that now propel them into international competition.
Lyle Asari and Aiden Brummer, the academy’s standout students, were celebrated last week as they received their official South African colors in preparation for the prestigious event, which runs from August 23 to September 1. The excitement and pride among their peers and families were palpable.
Fifteen-year-old Aiden, a three-time South African champion in point fighting, will compete in the under-63 kg Older Cadet Boys category across multiple disciplines: point fighting, kick light, and team events. Aiden, no stranger to the international arena, was first selected for the national team in 2022. Unfortunately, he missed the opportunity to compete at the Junior World Kickboxing Championship in Italy alongside his teammate Dylan Isaacs.
Sixteen-year-old Lyle, who secured second place at the SA Championships in point fighting, will be taking on the Junior Boys under-74 kg category in point fighting and the team event.
Their coach, Shihan Ruehan van Romburgh, officially presented them with their Team SA outfits and kit, sparking cheers from their relatives and teammates. He motivated his students with powerful words: “Success is never owned; it is rented, and the rent is due every day.”
Councillor Ronald Nutt, OM Mayco Member for Community Services, also extended his congratulations to the young athletes. “Your success is the result of hard work and dedication. Well done!” he said, urging them to relish the moment. “Take time to savor this achievement, knowing that countless individuals have supported you behind the scenes. We are confident that both of you will represent Overstrand and our country with pride and distinction.”
