The Best Herbs To Grow In Your Kitchen
Green fingers…
The various farm stalls in Hermanus and the surrounding area always have freshly picked piles of herbs for you to buy. Honestly It makes us feel like we should try and grow something ourselves…but what and how, here’s how!
We here at ShowMe Hermanus have scoured through information to provide you with the best 10 herbs to grow inside your kitchen. It is easy, requires very little preparation and soon you will be enjoying your own herbs.
What you will need:
A large, window sill that remains relatively sunny throughout the day and a bright kitchen light. The area should have a good flow of air but bear in mind that during winter time an open window will be to cold for your plants.
Containers and soil:
Any medium pot with drainage holes will do. The sky’s the limit when selecting these and there are lots of options available at local nurseries and stores. A bigger pot will give your plant roots more space to grow in the end you will have a larger plant to pick from.
A light, premium soil is best to aerate the soil as compact soil will starve the roots of your herbs.
Watering:
Each requires a various amount of water depending on the size of the plant, type of plant, time of the time of the year. Some plants do not grow that much during winter and because of this they need less water. A damp soil is best, if you are unsure dip you finger about a centimetre into the soil, if it is dry you know it is time to water your plant.
Feeding:
Herbs tend to grow more sporadically in the spring time and it is worth feeding them a liquid fertilizer every four weeks. Organic fertilizers can be used every other month if you prefer.
Maintenance:
By sticking to the above mentioned guidelines you will have strong, healthy herbs that you can harvest throughout the year!
