On 23 February during an interschool event in Durbanville, Rebekah Meredith came to Caitlyn Manchester’s rescue when she had an allergic reaction after eating a protein bar.
They are both 13 years old and in Grade 8. “It all started when I had this protein bar that I never had before.
I am allergic to nuts and after checking the ingredients, I ate the bar and it was really yummy. After a few minutes, my tongue started to swell, and I immediately realized that there was something in the bar that I am allergic to,” Caitlyn explained. Knowing that there is something wrong she rushed to her friend Rebekah for help.
“I immediately went to see Rebekah because she is also allergic to nuts and knows what to do.
Instinctively seeking help, Caitlyn turned to Rebekah, who, being familiar with nut allergies, was prepared. Rebekah, carrying two epipens at all times, offered one to Caitlyn. Despite initially declining, Caitlyn’s condition worsened, eventually prompting her to accept Rebekah’s aid.
Recalling the events, Caitlyn described her deteriorating state, “Breathing became a struggle, hives covered me, and vomiting ensued. It was a dramatic and intense experience.”
following protocol, the epipen injection warranted hospital observation. However, Caitlyn’s condition improved, sparing them a trip to the hospital. Caitlyn expressed deep gratitude for Rebekah’s swift response, despite the costly epipens.
Rebekah, understanding Caitlyn’s ordeal, shared her own lifelong battle with allergies. “I’ve known about my nut allergy since I was two. Sensing any reaction triggers my ‘action plan’ mentality.”
Caitlyn emphasized Rebekah’s heroism, crediting her with saving her life. The incident prompted Caitlyn to pursue obtaining epipens and a medical bracelet, vowing to be more vigilant about her diet.
High School Head, Mariet Lemmer, commended their friendship, noting its essence lies in mutual support. “True friendship means being there for one another. I’m immensely proud of these girls.”
With a shared smile, Rebekah and Caitlyn reflected on the significance of solidarity. “Appreciate your friends and care for them, as you never know when you’ll rely on each other.”
