South American Spice In An Italian Deli
Joanne Kunz is a fun loving, vivacious Hermanus local who owns and runs The Original Deli & Wine Lab in Hermanus along with her husband, Peter.
Focused on only the good things in life, her wit and charm are what have people returning to the Deli. Her stories are captivating and her advice simple, with a good dash of sarcasm thrown in for good measure, follow her advice if you dare!
See what this local lady had to say to us…
Where were you born and how did you end up in Hermanus?
I grew up in Trinidad, a large island just north of South America, in the Caribbean Sea. I travelled to England where I met Peter (Husband). We travelled while newly married and then headed to South Africa.
What inspired you to get involved in the restaurant industry?
A sweet talking husband is a dangerous thing.
Chefs are nut’s, why?
We love cooking but are to tired to eat, that makes for a lot of hungry, intense people.
If you weren’t in the restaurant industry I would be…
Having a beauty treatment at a luxury spa.
If I am not in the kitchen I can be found…
In bed, under a feather duvet with a box of chocolates and a good book!
If you date or marry a chef you need to know…
That they will always smell of food.
What’s a trendy food ingredient that you are sick of by now…
Sundried tomatoes
If I was a kitchen utensil I would be…
A whisk, stirring up trouble!
If Hermanus was a plate of food it would be…
A rich, cheese stuffed tortellini with mushroom sauce and topped with bacon. Hermanus is stuffed with feel good places, things to do, wine to drink, delicious food to eat and great people to meet. It’s a combination of everything, perfectly suited to each other.
If Hermanus was a wine what would it be?
A cool, crisp, classy Sauvignon Blanc for those warm summer days and relaxed afternoons!
Hermanus is…
Home
My favourite place in Hermanus is…
Sitting at Onrus Beach and feasting on fish and chips at the Onrus Beach Bistro & Kiosk.
My best childhood memories are…
Of playing cook in the garden with bird eye peppers, yikes my eyes! Watching my dad make souse, an Indonesian dish made using pigs trotters, cucumber in a cold soup stock.
