ShowMe | Megan Smith
Megan Smith is the content editor of ShowMe Hermanus. She was born and raised in Hermanus and it is no wonder that she returned, her passion for the outdoors and the simple life is perfectly suited to the laid back lifestyle of her home town.
See what this local lady has to say to us…
Why did you come back to Hermanus?
I was born here in Hermanus and stayed here until I was 18. When I finished school I headed to Cape Town to study PR and international communications.
The reason I returned to Hermanus was simple, Cape Town was no longer doing it for me. I missed the long walks on the beach, time for myself and my family as well as the fresh air, as opposed to sitting in rush hour traffic and just being another “number“.
Describe yourself in 3 words…
Curious, talkative and impatient.
What made you decide to become an editor?
I have a love for words, always have. If I am not talking up a storm I am writing up a storm. There is freedom in the written word.
If you are not in the office, what are you doing?
If I am not in the office I am relaxing at home with a good book or dabbling with one of my art projects. I recently got a sewing machine, I have never used one before so I’m looking forward to testing it out. (Wish me luck!)
The best part of my job is…
The fact that I am doing what I love, meeting new people and that my job allows me to explore the beautiful Overberg area daily!
Hermanus is…
First and foremost my home, it is a place where I feel most like me and a place that you run into friends daily without setting a date.
I love Hermanus in the…
Summer time, the beach is in walking distance of my home and the days are long. There is nothing better than enjoying a glass of wine on the beach in the evening. Toes in the sand, beautiful scenery and a dog that insists on coming along.
My favourite place in Hermanus is…
In the mountains or on the beach, at the Hermanus Country Market or at home, having a sundowner at one of the sea front restaurants or feeding the seagulls “slap chips” at Gearing’s Point. Let just say…EVERYWHERE!
I wish I knew then what I do now about…
Accepting myself for who I am. It took a long time to discover and be comfortable with who I am. Trying to be somebody who you aren’t is overrated.
My best memories are…
Riding along on the tractor with my “Oupa” on his farm out in Stanford. Learning to fish and surf with my dad, I can catch a fish but not a wave! Meeting my husband and introducing him to my 2 meter tall father, that was funny. Milkshake dates with my mom that have now turned into bottle of wine times with her, and lastly hiding my sisters barbies in the sandpit when we were kids.
Megan’s Motto: Don’t take life to seriously!
