New Kid On The Block – The Eatery – Tullishe Le Roux
Side Street Gem…
The little side street in the heart of Hermanus will never be the same again and that is merely stating it in a good way! The Eatery, a much loved local restaurant in Hermanus is home to some colourful characters, the brightest definitely in the form of chef and co-owner Tullishe Le Roux.
Tullishe trained at Warwicks Chef School and is an experienced, well travelled chef. After leaving the acclaimed Lourensford Wine Estate she packed her bags and headed for our sleepy town, reviving the food culture in Hermanus.
See what she had to say…
What inspired you to become a chef?
I really did fall into this career! The hospitality trade isn’t always everyones first choice.
Chefs are nuts…(why?)
Nuts??? Well is suppose we are all a little odd. I think all true chefs live by the motto ” work hard and party harder”. We always find ourselves under a mountain of pressure when the rest of the world are at play. This would make anyone crazy, no?
If you weren’t a chef you would be…
I always wanted to do something in the medical field.
If you are not in the kitchen I am found…
Doing very little, I love reading and then of course eating other people’s food!
If you date or marry a chef you need to know…
Cooking is always going to be the third person in your marriage and that we are actually quite happy with toast, as long as we don’t have to make it ourselves!
What’s a trendy food or ingredient that you are sick of by now…
Not sure, I don’t really follow trends that much in my own cooking style. But i really have no time for poncy food. Simplicity and honesty, thats real cooking.
Have you ever been served anything that you found totally disgusting and lied?
Haven’t we all?
Does Hermanus inspire your food, if so how?
Not Hermanus as such, but definately it’s people. It makes your job such a pleasure if you can feed an appreciative audience.
If Hermanus was a dish what would it be?
Braaied snoek on the coals with apricot jam glaze, sweet potatoes and heaps of garlic. I only tend to eat this at home, when mom makes it!
If Hermanus was a wine what would it be?
A nice dry rose, just easy going and laid back!
Hermanus is…
Always going to be my home.
My best childhood memories are…
Definitely of growing up in this town.
I wish I knew then what I do now about…
Cooking for your own pleasure firstly and then the appreciation will follow.
Fun, fearless and feisty she warms hearts and you will miss her laugh when you leave. The Eatery reflects her style, honest with undertones of intrigue.
Hermanus should be chuffed to have this local personality in her arms!
