Maeve Dewar – Dare to Dream
Maeve Dewar
Maeve Dewar is a talented artist and has recently entered the international art scene with her work being exhibited in Cape Town, London and New York. Maeve has been painting for over 35 years, and although she works in all mediums, for the last 10 years, she has more specifically focused on mastering her unique water colour technique. Maeve lives and works from her studio in Vermont.
For 4 years Maeve studied under Christian Prosser (graduate London School of Art), who subsequently became her mentor and friend. Christian inspired her to paint from her gut and intuition, taught her how to love and value the magic and power of colour. One of those important moments was an exercise of 400 shades of green. He was the first person who made her aware that it was more important for her to “get inside”, rather than feeding off what other people said or told her to do.
She has travelled extensively throughout the country teaching and giving workshops, struggling always not to keep bread on the table, but more importantly, paints, brushes and canvases. Maeve’s work is currently respresented in South Africa, USA, UK Australia, Holland, Portugal, Italy and Germany.
From certain angles different images appear; and in different light others can be seen, often not all seen at first glance.
Artist Statement
“If I could reach and soften each and every soul whose eyes and hearts glance at my work and also create an awareness of things unseen – a mindfulness of all of life, I will have achieved my life’s work and purpose.
I squeeze the colour onto the canvas. A burst of energy comes to life! Everything is guided. I flow and move the paint around; and when this flow of energy is over; that’s when I’m done. Sometimes it might mean going back a number of times before a work is completed. Colour, for me, is a purpose-driven-movement. My technique of water colour is a unique creation, crafted passionately over the last ten years. It continues to be an evolution and a journey of personal expression. I place colour upon colour upon colour, taking away and then sometimes putting back.
It’s an approach that eventually creates a layered feel and mysterious holographic movement within. From certain angles different images appear; and in different light others can be seen, often not all seen at first glance. My work is a journey of discovery that I hope, will touch your soul and awaken your inner voice.”
