Barefoot Beauty – Mada Morkel
Barefoot Beauty
Mada Morklel is the lady behind Camphill Farm Community’s fundraising and P.R. A hard worker, focused on ethics and remaining true to oneself is what has allowed not only the farm to blossom but those who call Camphill home!
Mada was born in Sabie, Mpumalanga and grew up in Hazyview, though during her teenage years she was not to fond of Hermanus it has grown on her and now she would be rather here than anywhere else in the world.
See what this local lady had to say to us…
What made you decide to settle upon Hermanus?
I lived here as a teenager and couldn’t wait to leave, city life and a decade in the UK helped me realize what an absolute paradise Hermanus was.
Describe yourself in 3 words…
Creative, loyal and honest.
My 3 favourite things in the world are…
My children’s giggles, time in nature, friends, great food and wine, all at once!
I decided to become involved with Camphill Farm Community because…
Because of the farm and dairy. It is one of only four dairy farms in the Western Cape that is managed on biodynamic principles. It was in need of a farmer just at the same time that the hubby, an inspired natural farmer, and myself moved back to SA. Our intention was to start our family and continue on a mission to promote sustainable agriculture, farming that is both good for the planet and good for people. After a few years as ‘the farmer’s wife’ I picked up the fundraising hat because of the great need for funding to continue caring for the intellectually disabled residents of Camphill Farm Community, especially those indigents who have no means and no one else to look after them.
What makes Camphill Farm Community unique…
It is the best possible place for persons with intellectual and cognitive disabilties to live. It is a long term residential facility located on a productive farm which is managed organically. It is a safe environment where everyone is treated as equal human beings, supported and empowered to live a truly self-fulfilled life.
They have all their basic needs met, and also access to diverse work opportunities (mostly on the farm and also in town) and social opportunities. Every person receives the support and encouragement that they need to live a full life. This is not an easy thing to achieve, and everybody here works very hard at it, every day, with absolute commitment.
I love being a part of Camphill Farm Community because…
It is wonderful to see people develop and blossom, despite the immense challenges of their disabilities. I also love how the community is committed to ethical and sustainable farming practices.
If you aren’t on the Farm what are you doing?
Running errands in town, having a coffee and croissant at the Eatery. For the occasional break from paradise we hit Cape Town for a weekend.
My motto in life is…LIVE!
Hermanus is…
Probably the best place in the world to live.
My favourite place in Hermanus is…
That swimming pool at the Bayview Flats in the early morning hours of summer. Sadly their security has improved a lot over the years…
I wish I knew then what I do now about…
Butter. There was no need to stop eating butter. All those wasted years…
My best memories are…
All barefoot…
