Butterfly World | Paarl
The butterfly park is located at the cross roads of the Paarl, Stellenbosch and Wellington Wine Routes, near the small Boland town of Klapmuts. Just off the N1 at Exit 47, on the Route 44 (300m to the south), it is very accessible to the many tourists visiting the area.
Butterfly World is a lush tropical garden inhabited by butterflies from all over the world. The 1000 m2greenhouse is replenished by 500-800 butterfly pupae imported per week, all year round, from countries as diverse as Costa Rica, Philippines, Malaysia and China.
The greenhouse provies the high temperature and humidity levels required by these beauties, but they also need sunshine to activate them. On days when the sun is not shining, you get the opportunity to see them resting, up close and personal.
There are also other very interesting displays such as the Martin Filmer Spider Room, which displays indigenous and exotic spiders and scorpions in locked glass terraria.
The myths and fears surrounding these eight legged creatures are usually unfounded. Seeing the scary scorpion through glass, taking a good look and reading the relevant information, often creates more interest than revulsion. There is also a reptile bay with some large iguanas.
Opening Times: Monday to Sunday: 09H00 – 17H00: Open on all public holidays except 25 December.
