Volunteer Wildfire Services Jonkershoek – Recruitment
The Volunteer Wildfire Services is a not-for-profit organisation that assists in protecting and managing our Natural Heritage, stopping wildfires and protecting the water catchment area for most of the Western Cape. We are based in Jonkershoek in Stellenbosch and we have just started our recruitment for 2012.
Who are we?
Volunteer Wildfire Services is a group of highly motivated volunteers committed to fighting wildfires that threaten our natural heritage. The first VWS station was founded in 1999 at Newlands, to support the Table Mountain National Park. The devastating fires around Stellenbosch and Somerset West in February and March 2009 highlighted the need for a similar station in the Boland, and in November 2009 VWS Jonkershoek went operational with 27 qualified firefighters. VWS is an independent Section 21 Company that assists CapeNature and SA National Parks by suppressing fires, protecting our Natural Heritage and maintaining the western cape’s water catchment areas in remote mountains and along the urban fringe.
Why is VWS important?
Although fire is a crucial part of the Fynbos life cycle, most wildfires today are started by human activity. These unnatural fires have become too frequent and too intense, and lead to the extinction of many indigenous plant and animal species if they are not contained.
They will be holding the following information meetings:
- Wednesday, 28 March at CapeNature Jonkershoek
- Tuesday, 3rd April in Somerset West (tbc)
- Thursday, 12th April in Paarl (tbc)
- Tuesday, 17th April at CapeNature Jonkershoek
