Duiker missing from Helderberg Nature Reserve
Residents near the Helderberg Nature Reserve are requested to assist in locating a reportedly escaped Duiker.
Per conversation in a post on a Somerset West facebook group, it was reported that a buck escaped from the Helderberg Nature Reserve a few nights ago through the gate at the corner of Reservoir and Hillcrest Roads – the buck (described as a duiker) is said to have run towards the direction of Radloff Park.
The Duiker is a small, shy antelope with only the males having short horns. It gets its name from the Afrikaans word ‘duiker’ which means to dive, relating to the animal’s habit of ducking away into bushes when danger threatens or when alarmed.
Please contact Ashton (021 444 9747), Owen (021 444 9743) or the SPCA wild life unit afterhours (083 326 1604) if you come across the animal.
