POWS excited about 2019 Sanlam Cape Mile experience
The Phoenix Open Water Swimming Club (POWS) is aiming to have their largest number of entries yet at an open water swim when they take on the Sanlam Cape Mile brought to you by Sanlam Investments at the majestic Eikenhof Dam (Elgin Grabouw) on Sunday, 17 February 2019.
The Phoenix Open Water Swimming Club was established in October 2009 in honor of Eriche Harley and his contribution towards the upliftment of the less fortunate children in and around Ravensmead, Elsies River and Cravenby.
“Eriche Harley dedicated his life to teaching, with an emphasis on swimming and water safety,” says Joyce Blows, Phoenix Open Water Swimming Club. “The goal of POWS is to broaden the public’s knowledge on water safety when attending beaches, rivers, and dams. We introduce communities to open water swimming and strive to continue building a strong, supportive network that encourages youth and members to flourish in and out of the water, in so doing empowering members with the skill to swim. Currently we are teaching +- 40 learners between the ages of 6 – 18.”
“The Sanlam Cape Mile has opened the door of opportunity to our children to work towards a goal of one day competing in this prestigious event,” continues Blows. “POWS has participated in the Sanlam Cape Mile since 2014 with our entry numbers growing each year. In 2017 we won the prize for the club with the most entries. It is a world class event that exposes our swimmers to the sport of open water swimming in a safe, fun and controlled environment. The feedback received from our swimmers after the 2018 event was overwhelming. They thoroughly enjoyed the day and were truly inspired by the elite athletes. We look forward to being part of the 2019 event.”
The Phoenix Open Water Swimming Club welcomes any type of support or donations. To show support email Joyce Blows via joyceblows@gmail.com
