The Unmistakable Sounds of Jeremy Loops!
White River – From a small surfing town to the wild bush of the Lowveld, Jeremy Loops finally made it back. His shows at The Barnyard White River was sold out. It went quicker than cookies at a birthday party. And the loops man spoor that set in the veld of the Lowveld in White River is not going to dry up again. I went on Thursday 06 September to Casterbridge to watch the musician I’ve been following for so long.
Back in the day…the Up The Creek days, I saw Jeremy the first time. It was like 40 people in front of the stage. He was first up for the evening so hardly anybody saw him. Since at UTC you kinda on African time from chilling in the river all day, drinking Titanics and never stop evenings. So Jeremy was still wearing his hats with the feathers, making tunes with a baby noise toy, loop pedal board and guitar. Forward this to 2018 and the man has grown into a respect South African artists that travel the world flat. In 2015 Blue Moon had the pleasure of hosting him on the mountain. His show was also a success and that was the last we saw of Jeremy in the Lowveld.
But Barnyard changed this when they agreed to have Jeremy here on stage. The evening started early with a pink gin drink from Dollie Gin Company. First time seeing a Land Rover for a bar. As the people started to slow stream under the mango trees and stars the excitement to see Jeremy was felt everywhere. After a light dinner from the Picasso Mexicana food truck, we had more pink gin. The opening band for the evening was Gossip Girl Trio, a CMDA taught students but friends now. Gossip Girl used to be a duo but they added a bassist and what a change this is. The vocalist, Christine Glass, a voice will give Janice Joplin a run for her whisky. I was certainly impressed by the comfort levels of the trio on stage and their performances on both vocals and guitars. My only complaint is that their opening act was on a bit long. Like 30 minutes max is cool.
Eventually, the lights dimmed and the crowd moved in the Barnyard. What I loved about this set up was there was no tables and chairs inside! Made it dancing and singing so much better without fearing to be in someone’s way. And the youngsters basically took over the front of the stage. But none of us could contain ourselves when Jeremy got onto the stage. And the smile on his face made the wait so much better. Joined on stage with him was Hiram Koopman on keys and saxophone. Mr Sakitumi all the way from Kimberley on bass and Devin Jones on drums. But one face on stage has been with Jeremy basically from the start, Motheo Moleko. His rap and MC skills are like eating popcorn, you just want more. And the 5 of them had the perfect recipe to create such a hype on stage.
Opening with “Sinner” it already tested the crowd sing-a-long voices. Other songs that were performed were “My Shoes”, “Power”, “Gold”, “Freak” “Waves”, Running Away” and “See I wrote it for you”. What also stood out from the show was Jeremy’s beautiful acoustic versions of “Higher Stakes” which from day one stuck a cord with me. When he first released the raw edition of it I was going through a heartbreak, which the song is about. So I could so relate to the song and to hear him sing it in the acoustic version of it was amazing. “Dreaming Again” is another song that stood out.
The last mentioned song I have to bring out the old fart in me. It’s a known fact that when someone is telling a story, you shut up and listen. Now kids, yes kids, next time an artists is telling the story of how the song came together then you listen. Keep quite and listen. To have to hear your drunken brandy infused voice blabbering his name out is not cool. Also, don’t VAPE in someone’s face. To have the musician ask people, not to vape was seriously uncool. Not all of us like it and it should be treated as a cigarette = disgusting.
All in all the Loops show couldn’t be better. Some moaned about the sound but I say for once the sound at Barnyard was amazingly good. Well done AVS, the stage was lit as well. The more light on the musicians the better for photos.
By the end of the show Jeremy was in love with the crowd of the Lowveld. He only had good praises about us on his social media networks. And I can say without a doubt, the Lowveld loves Jeremy Loops! Check out the photos below to see if you were spotted….
Rock & Roll Regards,
