We opened the first restaurant in 2004 on an isolated beach at Groot Brak Rivier, near Mossel Bay. Since October 2012 you can also kick off your shoes at the second De Vette Mossel on our Bushveld Beach in Hartbeespoort Dam, Gauteng. You can now also find De Vette Mossel in Parys (Free State) & Nelspruit (Mpumalanga) as well as Klerksdorp.

De Vette Mossel@Harties poog om veel meer te bied as bloot ‘n ete – dit is ‘n ervaring, in ongewone en informele omstandighede waar jy saam met vriende (oues en nuutgevondes) gesellig saam verkeer, waar niemand jou aanjaag nie en waar jy soveel seekos eet as waarvoor jy lus is – net soos ons langs die Weskus maak.

De Vette Mossel lends itself perfectly to work functions, year-end functions, birthday bashes and other, where colleagues and friends can interact and enjoy themselves in an informal and relaxing atmosphere.

Ons spyskaart bestaan uit 8 hoofdisse wat na mekaar voorgesit word. Van alles kan jy soveel eet as wat jy wil of kan… maar dis glad nie so maklik nie…
Mosselvleis
Met uie, handevol knoffel en plaasbotter.
Mossel-in-Skulp
Gestoom in uie en witwyn.
Weskussnoek
Met soet-soetpatats – Weskusstyl.

Met 4 soorte vis, massas kalamari, mossels en handevol skoongemaakte garnaalsterte.

Met melk en kaas – tot Karoo-boere eet van hom.

En natuurlik deurentyd, Potbrood, wat die hele tyd net daar gebak word – met plaasbotter en konfyt. Pasop vir hom – die lekkerte gaan jou verlei!
Feitlik al die disse word net daar, voor jou, op oop vure voorberei – dit waarborg van-die rooster-af-vars seekos… soos dit hoort!
Spyskaart is onderhewig aan seisoene en beskikbaarheid.
Our menu consists of 8 courses are prepared and served one after the other of which you may eat as much as you like – or can! But this is not as easy as it sounds…..

The majority of the courses are prepared in full view on open fires in front of you. This guarantees off–the-grid-fresh seafood… as it ought to be.

We only use seafood products which are classified by SASSI as “green”.

HOW IT WORKS
Ons by De Vette Mossel@Harties poog om veel meer te bied as bloot ‘n ete. Dit is ‘n ervaring in ongewone en informele omstandighede waar jy saam met vriende (oues en nuutgevondes) gesellig saam verkeer, waar niemand jou aanjaag nie en waar jy soveel seekos eet as waarvoor jy lus is – net soos ons langs die Weskus maak…
Die uitstekende voorbereiding van goeie gehalte seekos, in oorvloed en waarde vir geld, is ons erns.
Die disse word die een na die ander voorgesit. Ons streef daarna om seekos perfek gaar te maak en dit onmiddelik daarna voor te sit.
Ons weier om seekos in massa voor die tyd gaar te maak – ons gee nie om (en jy behoort ook nie) dat jy ‘n paar minute wag vir die volgende sarsie seekos nie.
Dit waarborg vars-vars voorbereide seekos – ‘n moet vir voortreflike seekos.
Kuier gerus – jy sal behoorlik ingelig word wanneer elke nuwe dis of die volgende sarsie seekos voorgesit word. En onthou, niks by ons raak ooit “op” nie – die ergste wat kan gebeur, is dat dit “op pad” is.
We at De Vette Mossel@Harties strive to offer much more than merely perfectly prepared seafood – this is an experience, in unusual and informal surroundings, where you relax with friends (old ones and newly found ones), where your time is your own and where you may eat as much as you like or can – just like we do along the West Coast.
The excellent preparation of top quality seafood, in abundance, and value for money, is our pride.
The different dishes are prepared and presented one after the other. We strive to prepare seafood perfectly, and to serve it immediately thereafter. This guarantees freshly prepared seafood on the plate – an absolute must for exceptional seafood.
FRUIT OF THE GRAPE
Upon arrival we welcome you with a complimentary glass of Cape wine. Please bring along your own cooler box with your own drinks (remember ice and glasses). R100 Corkage fee per Cooler Box.
MENU
The different dishes are presented to you one after the other. Relax, wind down – we eat for almost three hours! And remember, we will never run out of anything – the worst that can happen is that it is on its way!
We donate all food that could not be finished (and there is normally a rather substantial amount of food left) to seriously needy families in the area. Nothing goes to waste here.
WEATHER
Although De Vette Mossel is partly an open air restaurant, all seating is under canvas roofs.
De Vette Mossel@Harties is situated in a summer rainfall area, so the restaurant may be closed from time to time due to thunderstorms or heavy rain. Guests will receive ample notice in case of cancellations due to bad weather.

Heerlike atmosfeer, goeie geselskap, goeie kos en uitstekende Gasheer en Gasvrou. Vadersdag en my Verjaarsdag gevier met Anton Botha se musiek. As jy Lief is vir seekos, probeer gerus van snoek, seekos potjie, tot calamari en moet nie die gebakte brood vergeet nie.

Wat ‘n awesome ondervinding was ons eerste keer by De Vette Mossel nie gewees nie!!! Ons het heerlik gekuier en heerlik geëet! Die kinders het ‘n jol gehad! HISTORY More about us…
Early in December 2004, Niël du Bois arrived in Mossel Bay with Brolloks, a Chev lorry from the early 1950’s. His mission – to begin a seafood restaurant on a beach – somewhere….and to give his roaming spirit free reigns after decades as a journalist and media advisor.
He came prepared – Brolloks was stacked with rough building materials, including fishnets and ropes, and Niël was filled with a vision!!!
With the blessing from Above, the help of laborers and friends, (and thanks to the unexpected support from a minicipal official or two), the first De Vette Mossel was erected, the doors opened and….the guests arrived, and arrived…and arrived…..and with the continued support of old and new patrons De Vette Mossel grew and grew.
It was unavoidable that the success should spill over and in October 2012 Neels and Annette Swart opened the second De Vette Mossel Seafood Restaurant at Hartbeepoort Dam in the North West, under the watchful eye and guidance of Niël – with its own beach and Tietiesbaai lighthouse.
Here you are in the extremely capable hands of friends Jannie & Rochelle, who fit the profile of typical West Coast hosts like a glove. Be assured of personal, friendly attention and highly efficient service.
The formula at all four restaurants is the same…
Eat as much as you like – or can!
Vroeg Desember 2004 arriveer Niël du Bois in Mosselbaai met Brolloks, sy Chev lorrie wat uit die vroeë 1950’s uit dateer. Sy misie – om ‘n seekosrestaurant op die strand te begin …erens… en om vrye teuels te gee aan sy swerwersgees na dekades as joernalis en media adviseur.
Hy het voorbereid gekom – Brolloks was gelaai met rowwe boumateriale, visnette en toue en Niël was gevul met ‘n visie!
Met die seën van Bo, die hulp van werkers en vriende en (te danke aan die onverwagse ondersteuning van een of twee munisipale amptenare) is die eerste De Vette Mossel opgerig, die deure is geopen, die gaste het gekom… en gekom….en gekom….en met die voortgesette ondersteuning van ou en nuwe klante het De Vette Mossel gegroei en gegroei.
Dit was onvermydelik dat die sukses moes oorspoel en in Oktober 2012 open Neels en Annette Swart die tweede De Vette Mossel Seekos Restaurant te Hartbeespoortdam, Noordwes onder die waaksame oog en leiding van Niël – met sy eie strand en Tietiesbaai ligtoring!!!
