The History of the Hartbeespoort Aerial Cableway
The cableway was originally constructed in 1973 by a Swiss manufacturing company GMD Müller, by 2005 the cableway fell into disrepair and was closed. Over the decades the cableway was frequently visited by people from around the world, giving them a panoramic view of the Magaliesberg, Hartbeespoort Dam and surrounds. The cableway also became famous as an ideal paragliding destination.
With the main aim of growing tourism in Hartbeespoort, Zargodox (Pty) Ltd. Began a private initiative in 2010 and purchased the old cableway. The Swiss company Rowerna AG and Zargodox invested time and expertise into the revamp & modernising of the old cableway using the latest materials & technology. It has since evolved into an unparalleled, uniquely South African adventure experience.
The largest cabin manufacturer in the world, Swiss company CWA Constructions supplied the new cable cars. Swiss company Fatzer AG supplied and installed the new galvanised cabling, the cableway was fitted and re-engineered according to Canadian Standards Association specifications.
To ensure a comfortable and safe visitor’s experience, touch-screen technology, auto cabin spacing and conveyor programming technology, as well as state-of-the-art cabin locators and switches were installed to take the cableway into the 21st century.
A new era has begun, the Aerial Cableway is ready to give visitors a world class cableway experience with fourteen hi-tech cable cars, built to carry six passengers at a time and able to transport up to 500 people per hour (round trip).
