TLC for Cango Gaves – 16 – 25 May 2012
The Cango Caves have been operating for close to 200 years as a Natural Attraction of South Africa and more than half of that as a major tourism destination in the country. Throughout this time much of the development that we see today, had already taken place. After a lot of planning, risk assessment and deliberation, the decision was made to replace the metal ladder in King Solomon’s Mines with a stainless steel one. The existing ladder (the only way to access the small tunnels at the end of the Adventure Tour), has corroded considerably over the time that it has been there and creates a significant risk to the visitors.
This ladder is priority number one for attention. The period chosen, 16 – 25 May 2012, for the closure of the Adventure Section coincides with the quietest time in our calendar and therefore will create the least amount of disruption.
The length of time needed for the project is due to the fact that the existing ladder has to be removed in sections, the new ladder must be assembled in sections and then installed. No welding, etc is allowed in the cave. This project, whilst small, is logistically challenging and will require countless trips to the nether regions of the Cave and back.
Once the work is done, visitors will be able to access the smaller tunnels through a safer, environmentally sound and attractive ladder.
