NMMU and partners rise against gender violence
Gender-based violence, or violence in any form, cannot and will not be tolerated. This was the central message that was discoursed by NMMU staff and students at the ‘silent march’ they held on campus earlier this year. Now as the whole country is preparing for the global 16 days of activism against abuse, NMMU and various partners are joining forces to bring much needed awareness on this significant issue right here in George.
The Super Ed (student society) at NMMU (George Campus), with the support of the university and fellow students are advocating a crusade against gender violence in partnership with the George Municipality’s Safe City initiative.
Two attention-grabbing events have already been scheduled.
-
An enigmatic happening at the Garden Route Mall and Thembalethu Square on 26Oct 2013 from 12:00
-
A Silent Demonstration on York Circle (and nearby areas) on 01 Nov 2013, from 13:00
“It is heart-warming and encouraging to see young people, such as these NMMU students, visibly and publicly taking a stance against social ills such as abuse against women, children and vulnerable persons. Through their own initiative they are setting a sterling example and making a contribution towards breaking the silence on abuse that is prevalent in our communities. As municipality, we applaud them for making a stand on this important issue, and for strengthening our Safe City Initiative through their active participation and collaboration”, says Pieter Pepler, Gender and Disability Co-ordinator at the George Municipality.
