The Southern Cape Old Car Club Heritage Tour 2019 pays tribute to the partaking 1070 Opel Rekord L
GEORGE – The annual Heritage Tour of the Southern Cape Old Car Club (SCOCC), proudly supported by ReCollection Rides, takes place on 20 to 24 September.
SCOCC members hail from George, Mossel Bay and Oudtshoorn, but also has members and representatives as far as Beaufort West and Victoria West.
Kobus Halliday has one of the largest private collection of old cars (over 100) in South Africa. He purchased his 1070 Opel Rekord L four years ago along with ample spare parts.
“This year’s Heritage Tour will be the second I will take her on. I am only the second owner and the car gives me 11 km/litre on the open road,” a proud Halliday said. “I am very happy with the car and it already has great sentimental value to me.”
The Rekord name evolved into the main name of the model; at first the name was used in close relationship with the Opel Olympia name, which pre-dated the Rekord but was also reinstated in a separate model in 1967.
The Opel Olympia Rekord was introduced in March 1953 as successor to the Opel Olympia, a pre-World War II design dating back to 1935. The Opel Olympia Rekord was built until 1957 in four different versions. Around 580,000 units were produced. Styling of the 1953-54 sedans resembled scaled-down versions of the contemporary Chevrolet in the U.S. Both cars were of course, products of General Motors.
In South Africa the Opel Rekord switched from the E1 to the E2 version only in 1984, General Motors’ South African subsidiary having changed from the Chevrolet brand name two years earlier.
Until 1986 the Opel Rekord was assembled by General Motors South Africa in Port Elizabeth, but as a result of an international sanctions regime General Motors were not permitted to invest further after 1986. The business was transferred through a management buy-out to a new company called the Delta Motor Corporation.
The former Rekord L-6 was replaced by the new Commodore A, a slightly disguised and better-equipped Rekord C available as two- and four-door sedan and hardtop coupé with six-cylinder engines only.
The Rangers were also transferred to this new generation, with the dropping of the 130 and 153 and the adding of a 1.7 L engine. In 1972, the line-up consisted of the base Ranger 1700, the mid-level Ranger 1900, and the top-of-the-line Ranger 2500. In 1974, a 2.8L engine was introduced to the Ranger family.

Kobus Halliday het een van die grootste privaat versamelings van ou motors (meer as 100) in Suid-Afrika. Hy het sy 1070 Opel Rekord L vier jaar gelede gekoop saam met voldoende onderdele.
“Die Erfenis-toer 2019 is die tweede keer wat ek dit saam met haar dit aanpak. Ek is slegs die tweede eienaar en die motor gee my 11 km / liter op die oop pad,” het ‘n trotse Halliday gesê. ‘Ek is baie gelukkig met die motor en dit het alreeds baie sentimentele waarde vir my.’
Die Rekord-naam het ontwikkel tot die hoofnaam van die model; aanvanklik is die naam gebruik in noue verwantskap met die Opel Olympia-naam, wat die Rekord voorafgegaan het, maar in 1967 in ‘n aparte model heringestel.
Die Opel Olympia Rekord is in Maart 1953 bekendgestel as die opvolger van die Opel Olympia, ‘n ontwerp wat dateer vanaf voor die Tweede Wêreldoorlog. Die Opel Olympia Rekord is tot 1957 in vier verskillende weergawes gebou. Ongeveer 580,000 eenhede is vervaardig. Die styl van die sedans van 1953-54 lyk soos afgeskaalde weergawes van die moderne Chevrolet in die Verenigde State. Albei motors was produkte van General Motors.
In Suid-Afrika het die Opel Rekord eers in 1984 van die E1 na die E2-weergawe oorgeskakel, en General Motors se Suid-Afrikaanse filiaal het twee jaar tevore na die Chevrolet-handelsnaam verander.
Tot 1986 is die Opel Rekord in Port Elizabeth deur General Motors South Africa vervaardig, maar as gevolg van ‘n internasionale sanksieregime kon General Motors nie na 1986 verder belê nie. Die onderneming is deur ‘n bestuursuitkoop na ‘n nuwe maatskappy oorgedra, die Delta Motor Corporation genoem.
Die voormalige Rekord L-6 is vervang deur die nuwe Commodore A, ‘n effens verbloemde en beter toegeruste Rekord C wat slegs beskikbaar was as twee- en vierdeur-sedan en hardedop-coupé met slegs ses-silinderenjins.
Die Rangers is ook na hierdie nuwe generasie oorgeplaas, met die opskorting van die 130 en 153 en die toevoeging van ‘n 1,7 L-enjin. In 1972 het die reeks bestaan uit die basiese Ranger 1700, die Ranger 1900 en die Ranger 2500. In 1974 was ‘n 2.8L-enjin aan die Ranger-familie bekendgestel.
