Thembalethu Celebrates Installation of High-Mast Lights for Enhanced Safety.
Thembalethu recently marked a significant milestone with the official activation of the first two out of 18 high-mast lights that have been installed in the area. These new lights, strategically positioned at the intersection of Balfour and Ntaka Street in Zone 1, as well as in Asazani and Silvertown, address the long-standing issue of insufficient lighting in densely populated parts of Thembalethu.
Recognizing the potential dangers associated with inadequate lighting, Bongani Mandla, Director of Electrotechnical Services, emphasized the importance of this initiative. He explained, “The absence of proper lighting often exposes residents to increased safety risks and potential criminal activities during nighttime hours. In response to this critical need, the George Municipality made multiple funding requests, which eventually proved successful as we secured approval from the Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG). This allowed us to embark on a project to install 30 high mast lights within a six-month timeframe.”
The 18 high-mast lights in Thembalethu represent the first phase of this ambitious undertaking. The remaining lights will be allocated to other areas, including five to Parkdene, four to Lawaaikamp, and three to Borcherds. To support the project, the MIG provided a total allocation of R17m, which was further supplemented by R2m of municipal funding.
Mayor Leon Van Wyk expressed his enthusiasm for the positive impact these lights will have on the safety of local communities. He stated, “I am delighted that we can provide these high-mast lights to our residents, enhancing their safety and well-being.”
Mandla praised the remarkable efforts of the project leaders, Edward Nqumse, Adrian van Molendorff, and their team, as well as CMB Consultants and MDL Engineering Projects Contractor, for their dedication and commitment to completing the installation of such a large number of high-mast lights within the designated timeframe and budget. He added, “We are already in the final stages of planning the next phase of high-mast light installations in other areas of the greater George region. Further details will be communicated to the public in due course.”
Mandla also called upon the community to actively protect this essential infrastructure against theft and vandalism, emphasizing the importance of preserving these lights for the greater benefit of the community.
