14th annual Outeniqua Wheelchair Challenge OCC
The 14th annual Outeniqua Wheelchair Challenge (OCC) hosted by George on the Garden Route was once again a great success.
It was my first time attending but certainly not my last. I thrived on the energy that was present from young and old big and small able and more able bodies present. More than 1500 wheelchairs participated.
I left Plettenbergbay early enough not to miss anything. I had no idea what to expect from the day, what a humbling experience it was.
Not knowing where to start and how to approach the event I just followed my instinct. I found a water point manned by Solidarity George in Knysna Road. Friendly volunteers, ample parking and a coffee outlet made me stop immediately. They were busy keeping everything in one place because of the nippy and strong wind.
“Cars crossing lanes are the biggest challenge every year” according to Marieta Verwey a volunteer.
The real disability is not to realize one’s ability.
At 8am the bell signalled the event into motion from the Mount View Resort. Professional athletes and serious competitors, doing 42km, had to twice complete a route from the circle at the York and Hope Street intersection to the entrance of the Garden Route Mall.
For the majority of the participants it was a fun walk up and down York Street with some of them being pushed by volunteers, some on crutches and others wheeling at free will.
A lot of hard work, money, time and energy were spent to make it such a well organised event. I have spoken to a number of individuals involved in the preparation. Volunteers and committee members are so passionate.
The George Mayor and heads of companies as well as celebrities handed out medals and special prizes. Recognition was given to certain individuals and professional athletes at the award ceremony.
