Leave our nightlife alone
This letter was published on the letters’ pages in yesterday’s edition of the George Herald.
The letter was written by local DJ, DJ Andy:
“I hope this letter to the community of George will act as an eye-opener.
George is a city in South Africa’s Western Cape province. The city is a popular holiday and conference centre and the administrative and commercial hub of the Garden Route.” (- Wikipedia)
We have it all here: beaches, camping, mountains, casino and a nightlife. Why take one away? Are we going to turn this town in to a retirement village, or are we going to grow with the times?
With the closure of one of the longest established clubs in George, Carouse, formerly know as Carousel, we are now left with two decent dancing venues. Zanzibar and Boulevard.
What will happen if we don’t have a place where our youth can unwind and party after a long week at work? One thing is for sure, when they want to party, they will party.
Whether it be a house or beach party, nothing will stop them from having a good time.
Isn’t it better to have them all in a secure, central and controlled place, or would you rather have them party where there is no security or control?
George needs a nightlife, not just for our youth, but also for our tourists and visitors from out of town.
We need to entertain not only by day, but also by night. Taking that away will be the biggest mistake you can make. I am asking the people of George, and the parents, let’s keep a vibrant nightlife in George.
If that gets taken away, I can assure you, more illegal drinking will start popping up all over town, beaches, house parties and so on, and that is where the real trouble will start.
What better place to party than in the main road, close to a police station and people you know.
Last of all, the nightlife also provides work for many people. We have bar staff, DJs, bands, cleaners, managers, promoters, event organisers, and many more.
They will be left without or with less work. Artists also need the nightlife for exposure. Most of the greatest bands and DJs became popular because of clubs and venues.

The great musician, Billy Joel once said: I think music in itself is healing. It’s an explosive expression of humanity. It’s something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we’re from, everyone loves music!“
