Hospitality inspections get underway
From 22 – 26 July 2013, labour inspectors from the Department of Labour will be embarking on a blitz inspection of the hospitality sector.
As part of the inspections, officials will also be running an advocacy programme; to inform both employers as well as employees of the mandatory requirements to be followed in terms of the hospitality sector and its aim to enhance compliance.
The awareness is also geared at ensuring that all parties are aware of their statutory obligations and rights and also aims to extend the protection of the legislation to vulnerable employees, whilst also promoting and enhancing the visibility and functionality of both the Inspectorate as well as the Department of Labour.
During previous inspections in this sector, a number of contraventions were picked up, which included deductions being made from employee’s salaries without written consent and pay slips not containing all the information, and in some cases, no pay slips at all.
During this advocacy and inspection time in particular, workers and employers in this industry are encouraged to contact the Department for information or advice on the sector which can be done by visiting any labour centre.
Workers may also contact the department should they need to report any grievances or present any queries related to their places of work. The number for the Department of Labour in George is 044 801 1200.
