Heritage resources register for George
The George Town Planning Department has completed a draft register of heritage resources in George and George residents now have the opportunity to comment and give their input.
The Town Planning Department started with a process last year to gather information about resources in the bigger George and Wilderness area and invited the public to participate in the process to ensure that the inventory is as inclusive as possible.
According to Carel Venter, spatial planner at the municipality, the inventory will serve as a source of information about heritage resources. Resources are also classified. He said the fact that a heritage asset is listed in the register does not automatically lend protection to it.
Paper and electronic copies of the document are available at the Planning Department and the George Library and its branches.
A public information session will also be held at the banquet hall in York Street on Wednesday 26 September between 18:00 and 20:00.
People wanting to comment or give input, may send written submissions to: The Director: Planning and Housing, PO Box 19, George, 6530 before 15 October at 12:00.
To have resources considered for listing in the inventory, the public may still submit the heritage identification form that is available from Planning or can be downloaded from the municipal website, www.george.org.za. The completed form must also be handed in before the cut-off date.
