Gourmets & Gourmands 2017
R100 000 BID AT 2017 GOURMETS AND GOURMANDS CHAMPIONED BY HARTMANS ASTONISHES GUESTS
SOUTH AFRICA (August 2017) – The 2017 Gourmets and Gourmands championed by Hartmans will be remembered for years to come for a number of reasons. Guests arrived dressed to a tee befitting the theme of French Flair. Sparkling wine flowed freely and guests enjoyed canapes until the mesmerising performance of Helena Hettema started. The table settings exceeded everyone’s expectations as the restaurants decorated their tables in true French extravagance. And then the auction commenced delivering heart-stopping excitement raising an astounding amount of money to be allocated towards a new feeding scheme eating area where ±140 children will be fed!
The participating restaurants went all out to serve true French cuisine and guests were thoroughly spoiled. François Ferreira Academy, Rooi Kombuis, Fat Fish, Surval, Nina’s, Déjà Vu, Tia Rosa, Pomodoro, Salina’s, The Gannet, Signature Devine, George Garden Route Game Lodge, Fancourt, 101 Meade, Lalas Vintage, De Doornkraal Guesthouse and Bistro Celeiro worked passionately to deliver superior dishes. It was a privilege to have The Gannet and Pomodoro for the 9th consecutive year on board. The ChaÎne des Rôtisseurs and SACA ensured that the feast was of the highest standard.
Helena Hettema delivered a spectacular performance! With favourites of Edith Piaf such as ‘Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien’ and ‘Padam…Padam’ guests were instantly transported to France. Hettema closed with Jacques Brel’s Marieke which left the audience wanting more. This year’s auction was again facilitated by Frederick Bekker of Van Rensburgs Auctions and like always he performed with so much energy, guests just had to participate. The bid on a getaway to Zanzibar (flights included) coupled with a French Cooking Course by Kitchen Queen Karen Du Plessis escalated quickly and a stunning amount was reached.
When a passionate supporter of Carpe Diem School placed the final bid of R100 000 on a trip for two to France with 8 nights’ accommodation (paired with a private cooking class with the doyenne of French cooking, Marlene van der Westhuizen) Frederick Bekker announced that it was a record bid. The night wasn’t over yet! The highest bid on the Zenith men’s watch donated by Rafaelle D’Amato Jewellers was R40 000. The successful bidder donated the watch immediately to be auctioned off again! A Michel Herbelin watch was won during the surprise free Heads and Tails. The painting which the local artist René Scribante donated was snatched up for a substantial amount.
