Local woman receives university’s Gold Medal Award
GEORGE NEWS – Many people are aware of the work that Catherine Robar is doing to help her neighbours.
Well-known in Thembalethu but not everyone is aware that at the same time she was completing a Post Graduate Certificate in Food Security from Ryerson University via online/distance education.
The content of this course addresses issues of hunger, malnutrition, distribution of food, and environmental sustainability.

She was honoured on the evening of 14 June in Toronto, Canada, with Ryerson University’s highest honour, The Ryerson University Gold Medal Award.
This award is given to a student who has achieved the highest academic GPA (4.33) and who has demonstrated outstanding community service. Catherine was chosen due to her work with The Themba Development Project Association, based in Thembalethu.
The academic co-ordinator of this program states, “As academic co-ordinator I have had the opportunity to work with many exceptional students, but once in a while I have the very good fortune to work with a particularly exception person; Catherine Robar is that person.”
Catherine Robar and her husband Gcinisizwe Noyakaza founded The Themba Development Project in 2008. Their work takes place both in Thembalethu as well as in the Transkei.
