Radium Beer Hall, Orange Grove, Johannesburg

Since 1994, The Radium Beer Hall has won an international reputation and featured in overseas travel guides as a genuine South African experience, a must-see for tourists passing through Johannesburg. The Radium is one of Johannesburg’s oldest bars, starting life as a tearoom in 1929 and converted to a beer hall in 1944. The long bar is the original bar from the Ferreirastown Hotel from the early gold mining days.

The walls are covered with the history of the pub, pre-war soccer teams and jazzmen who have entertained at the venue, creating a wonderful ambiance. Add to this the good food and the foot-tapping live jazz that makes the embossed tin ceiling vibrate in sympathy. Now the Jazzed-Up Radium has live performances by different artists four nights a week.
