Nightclubs, bars and lounges in Greenside, Johannesburg

Greenside is like the new Melville, packed to the brim with bars and restaurants along the trendy Greenside strip.
Gin

Gin, Greenside, JohannesburgIf your idea of a good night out is good drinks and good music, then this hot 80’s neon styled spot in Greenside is the place.  The ambiance is arty and trendy with cool pop art on the walls and a colour scheme that makes you feel like you’re in a bar in Berlin. The upstairs balcony is chilled for a summer’s evening, even if the moose head, adorned with a glowing red headdress may have its eye on you!

Gin serves great cocktails, which have an emphasis on gin – who would have guessed – and from Tuesdays to Sundays serving “buy one get one free”, and specials on cocktails from 9h00 to 10h00 and then from midnight to 1h00.

Wednesdays are party nights, Thursdays are a buzz and very busy and on Saturdays there is a DJ.  Open: 15h00 till 2h00 from Tuesday to Saturday. 12 Gleneagles Rd, Greenside – next to Fratelli’s: Tel: 082 925 5674

 Bob Rocks

Bob Rocks, Melville, JohannesburgThis bar and restaurant is laid back and chilled, with an awesome selection of old school swing and jazz and some good old rock n’ roll – very 90’s sound pulling you to the tiny, intimate dance floor. Crowds are attracted at the weekends and after 22h00 it really pumps, making getting to the bar your next life challenge.

The food served here is better than most bars’ food where you can choose from finger foods like chicken wings and spring rolls, or step out for one of the main course meals like burgers, Prego rolls and fish and chips.

137 Greenway Road, Greenside, Johannesburg. Open late on weekends. Tel: 0116468981

The Office Bar

The Office, Greenside, JohannesburgThe Office is a modern hotspot, which is exactly where you should be headed if you feel like a chilled place to park after work, or a late night speak easy.

This is where hot, trendy people relax with a great drink and 80′s and 90′s music, especially on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, which are packed. The  music complements the service – the waiters know just which concoction to offer a customer who is feeling down and out or on top of the world.

Owners, restaurateurs Tom Hughes and Martin Jakoby also own The Loft and The Attic and have certainly lived up to their brand at The Office. It’s trendy, hip, upmarket and serves great cocktails which are half priced from 16h00 – 18h00 on Friday and mouth watering tapas which are reasonably priced.

10 Gleneagles Rd., Greenside: Tel: 011 023 9863

Mamma’s Shebeen

Mamas Shebeen, Greenside, Johannesburg

If you would like to know what a real African shebeen is like, then Mama’s is the place for you. This laidback, chilled pub is great to have a drink and good for conversation. The bright décor is true township and the food on offer is traditional South African and varies from all-time favourites like pap and stew to dishes like mopane worms or chicken-feet – brave enough? You have not lived the Shebeen experience if you have not tried these dishes!

The music is a wonderful selection of African rhythms, and the décor which includes old irons on the tables, a football table, zebra print painted walls and OMO washing powder branding completes the picture for a special experience.
