Wild Coast Meander – Slackpacking in the Eastern Cape
The Wild Coast Meander is South Africa’s original slackpacking trail, and remains one of its favourites. The origination and success of this trail in one of South Africa’s most remote and beautiful areas has sparked somewhat of a ‘slackpacking revolution’ in the country, leading to the development of many more exciting trails.
However, to date, none have surpassed the Wild Coast Meander for the experience that it offers to hikers. The 56km, 6-day trail traverses terrain that is magnificent and beautiful in its isolation from the civilised world, and unrivaled in its natural splendour. The opportunity to enjoy the striking beauty of the Wild Coast (without the stress of carrying six days worth of gear!) while staying at some of South Africa’s favourite coastal holiday resorts is what made, and continues to make, this trail so popular.
But, the opportunity to get close to the tranquil and unspoilt beauty of the Wild Coast is only one of the many things to be enjoyed on your days spent meandering along the coast. Many hikers enjoy taking the time to interact with the local Xhosa people, who enjoy the interaction just as much. The guides (who are local Xhosas and for whom the trail is creating employment) are also very friendly and enjoy interacting and sharing their knowledge of the Xhosa culture with guests.
