Whale Watching & 2020 Sardine Run – Bookings now open!
Much more than just a migratory mass of fish, the annual Sardine Run is a natural event of such epic proportions, it is hard to believe that it occurs annually just a couple of kilometres off our shores.
All though they are the reason for all the fuss in the first place, the largest migration on earth, the Sardine Run, is not only about the sardines. From May through to July, billions of sardines spawn in the cool waters of the Agulhas Bank and move northward along the East Coast of South Africa. They are accompanied by an army of marine predators, who are drawn to the mass migration, taking part in a rabid feeding frenzy.
This ‘safari of the sea’ attracts visitors both locally and internationally, who want to visit and witness this magnificent event for themselves. The migration predators include the common dolphin, Cape Gannet, Cape fur seals, Blacktip Shark, Dusky shark and Bryde’s whales amongst others. In addition, Humpback whales are continuously encountered on the sardine run. Whilst not attracted to the sardines per se, visitors get to see these leviathans as they pass trough the sardine run on their northern migration from Antartica to Mozambique’s summer breeding grounds.
Southern Cross Cruises, the only permitted Whale & Dolphine Watching Tour Operator in the city, offers day Whale & Dolphine Watching cruises off the coast of East London. Join hosts, John Barry and his wife Kathinka, for the 2020 Sardine Run and whale and dolphin watching season. Demand is high so book soon to avoid disappointment.
