The Dwesa-Cwebe Nature Reserve, Eastern Cape

The Dwesa-Cwebe Nature Reserve protects one of the biggest sections of indigenous coastal forest in the Eastern Cape and is also a critically important marine conservation area.
The reserve lies right in the middle of the Wild Coast region, with the Mbashe river – which intersects the reserve – marking this point.
The varying landscapes of the reserve are characteristic of the Wild Coast, with lush coastal forest on one side of the river and rolling hills and grassland on the other. Of course, no Wild Coast landscape would be complete without perfect stretches of golden beach, of which the reserve is home to a few.
The reserve is widely regarded as a ‘rambler’s paradise’, as rambling in pristine nature amongst the unique biodiversity of the coastal forest is an activity second-to-none here. The opportunities to get close to this fascinating environment, as well as away from civilization, and spot rare and beatiful creatures such as the Cape Clawless Otter and equally unique birds such as the Narina Trogon and Mangrove Kingfisher, turn a relaxing walk into a spectacle of wildlife.
For those who are less interested in spotting the wildlife, and simply want to take in the sights and sounds of this beauty-stricken environment, trails – or rather rambles – are marked out to the Kobole Point on the coast, as well as to the waterfall in the forest.

Getting there: from East London, take the N2 going to Butterworth. Continue through Butterworth to the settlement of Idutywa. Here, take the Oakland road and follow the signs to the reserve. Exercise caution as the roads may not be highly maintained.
