Gubu Dam Stutterheim, Eastern Cape

Halfway between Keiskamma Hoek and Stutterheim, at the foot of Mount Kubusie, is the Gubu Dam, reached by a magnificent forest drive. Only 100km from East London, this dam is an ideal spot for a beautiful getaway into nature. Surrounded by State Forests, opportunities abound for any type of outdoor activities.

Gubu dam and the river are stocked with brown and rainbow trout and is considered one of the best trout fishing dams in the Eastern Cape with its own angling club, the Stutterheim Trout Fishing Club, from whom permits can be obtained for fly fishing. No power boats are allowed on this dam but sailing and boating for pleasure are permitted. Boats can be hired from Natural High. Based at the edge of the indigenous forest, Natural High offers the adventure enthusiast an amazing variety of activities including abseiling, archery, guided forest walks, mountain biking and kayaking. Gubu Dam has a lovely picnic and camping facilities complete with braai area and ablutions making it a popular place for picnics. At the North East end of the Dam is the Gubu Dam Caravan Park which has been established by the Department of Forestry. It is set in idyllic surroundings amongst the trees, and the walks in the forest from the camp are gentle and beautiful.

Booking: There is no need to book for camping, but if you go during the week, you must phone ahead on 043 683 5247 in order for the camp manager to heat the hot water. Hot water is heated at the weekends. There are ablutions, but no electricity.

Directions: Drive to Stutterheim which is a small town on the N6 between East London and Queenstown. Then at the only robot in town turn west. Continue on this road for 19.4km where you will get a turn to the right to the Gubu Dam camp site. On the 19.4km road – keep left at the first major fork in the road, and keep right at the second fork.
