Gonubie Nature Reserve

Gonubie Nature Reserve, Grey Crowned CranesThe Gonubie Nature Reserve, 20km north-east of East London in the town of Gonubie, is home to over 130 species of bird, mostly water birds such as the beautiful Grey Crowned Cranes.

The reserve was established in 1955 to conserve a wetland habitat and associated bird, plant and animal species.

There is a well-established walking route and a bird hide overlooking an open body of water, which makes it ideal for birdwatchers interested in wetland species.

The reserve also has a small interpretive centre with bird and animal listings and a brief history of the area.

Ablutions are available and visitors are encouraged to utilise the benches and open spaces for picnics. Open Mondays to Fridays from 8.30am to 4pm.

From the N2, take the Oceanway offramp to Gonubie and close to the ocean, turn right onto 7th Street which leads down to the reserve.
