McCelland Adult Centre is registered with the Department of Social Development as a Non-Profit Organization. It is a residential and protected workshop facility catering to the needs of the intellectually impaired community in the Eastern Cape. 

Situated next to the Amalinda Nursery in Amalinda, East London, the Centre accommodates 70 live-in residents who are accommodated in 3 hostels and an Extended Care Unit.

It is the only Centre of it’s kind in the area that provides both residential and workshop facilities and we help communities from all over the Eastern Cape, including the previously disadvantaged areas in and around the East London Metropolis and from the former Transkei and Ciskei areas.

Admission Criteria

Only persons between the ages of 18 – 40 who fall within the mild to moderate group of intellectually impaired persons will be considered for admission to McClelland Adult Centre. Applicants must reside within the Eastern Cape and be independent in self-care.

Daily Activities At The Work Centre

Therapeutic and educational activities & tasks completed by intellectually impaired residents include the following:

●  Handwork e.g. sewing, crocheting, embroidery, beading, crafts, factory work etc
●  Daily physical exercises & therapeutic physical programs in the Hall, swimming, aerobic exercises & walking.  Sporting activities such as cricket and soccer for those residents who are able to participate.
●  DVD’s for social stimulation
●  Baking of biscuits, tarts, cakes and other confectionery
●  Carpentry e.g. making of beehive frames and restoring of old furniture
●  Factory work e.g. packaging of pens, plastics, wood etc
●  Choir practice

Here are a number of fund raising events held throughout the year:

Annual Bazaar

Where our handwork, crafts, baked goods and white elephant goods are sold to the public. This is the main fundraising event for the Centre and generates in the vicinity of R35,000 for our Centre.

Family Day

Where parents & guardians are invited to participate in a day of socializing and fun with their dependents. Many friends of families also enjoy the day with us and an average of R2000 is generated on that day.

Street Collection Day

Whereby staff and members of the public are allowed by the local municipality to stand for one day with collection tins throughout our city to collect money on our behalf. This event generates an approximate income of R15,000 per annum.

Casual Day

Where stickers are sold to the public to raise awareness for the disabled. During 2012 an amount of R7,000 was raised in this manner whilst the income generated during 2013 amounted to R7,400.

The McClelland Centre Concert

Presented by our residents towards the end of each year, this is a favourite on our social calendar. Our residents practice for months on end for this event that is well supported by the public. This fundraiser generates an average of between R4,000 to R5,000 per annum.

Are we able to issue a Section 18A certificate to donors so that their donations are tax-deductable?

What is the admittance criteria for McClelland Adult Centre?

How will my donation be used?

Donations will be used for the daily running of the centre i.e. paying specialised staff, medical bills, food, the protected workshop and the upgrading of important equipment.

How is the Centre Administered?

The affairs of the Centre are administered by members of a Management Committee that meets on a monthly basis. The office bearers, consisting of a Chairperson, Vice Chairperson and no less than seven other members (excluding employees of the Centre), are elected during each Annual General Meeting.The office bearers, who render their services on a voluntary basis, serve for a term of one year, after which they may be re-elected for a further term.

To deal effectively with the various activities of the Centre, the Management Committee Members are appointed to different sub-committees such as Staff Matters, Finance, Health, Land & Buildings and Fundraising. The chairperson of each sub-committee reports on the work of their sub-committee at each monthly meeting of the Management Committee.

The Centre Manager, Finance Manager, Senior Professional Nurse and Work Centre Supervisor report to the Management Committee at the monthly Committee Meeting.

Financial Contributions

Only 35% of the Centre’s running expenses are covered by subsidies. The shortfall is made up from fundraising events held throughout the year and from our kind-hearted benefactors. No government funding is received towards our Protected Workshop. We are looking for Individuals and Corporates who would like to assist us financially in keeping this vitally important service open for the Intellectually Impaired community of the Eastern Cape.

McClelland Adult Centre for the Intellectually Impaired is a registered NPO and we issue Section 18A Certificates for financial contributions.
