Services currently offered at the centre

As part of our commitment to developing a language Centre of excellence serving the Eastern Cape region, we offer the following services:

• Provision of help, support and guidance classes for parents and families of hearing impaired children.
• A pre-school with small classes for deaf and hearing-impaired toddlers where they are taught to hear and to speak through the Audio-Verbal method. 
• Language delayed pre-school children needing language therapy can be accommodated before they mainstream.
• Individual Speech therapy as part of the Frere Hospital Outreach Programme.
• One on one Language therapy for the children.
• Aftercare where further language enrichment takes place.
• Mapping services for adults and children fitted with cochlear implants.
• Additional English language enrichment lessons for scholars already in mainstream schools.
• Access to information and individual help from a wide range of healthcare professionals.
• Additional English Language enrichment lessons for hearing impaired ex Carel du Toit Scholars who are now mainstreaming.

Management Structure

The Carel du Toit Centre in East London operates as an NGO under the guidance of a Board of Trustees made up of medical professionals, past and present parents and concerned members of the pubic. Regular feedback on all projects undertaken by the Centre and issues relating to the day to day running of the pre-school happens at quarterly Trust Meetings. Our policy is an open door one based on accountability and transparency and copies of our audited annual Financial Statements are available on request.

Financial Donations

Although our buildings belong to the Frere Hospital, we need financial assistance to help us pay staff salaries (they currently earn well below what they could earn elsewhere). Financial donations will assist us in reaching our goal of financial stability.

Due to requirements of the Income Tax Act, any donation, whether in cash or kind, has to be received by the Carel du Toit Centre, East London on or before the last date of your year assessment.

Sponsor a Child

The Centre has a policy that insists that each child’s family assumes responsibility for paying for some aspect of their children’s education, whether it be for hearing-aid batteries, aftercare food costs or basic fees.

We appeal to individuals and businesses to consider adopting a child for the duration of their time at the Centre and assisting with some of these expenses. This programme is working well with 2 of our Cochlear Implantees currently in a sponsorship programme.

Adopt a Teacher

The Centre’s greatest asset lies in it’s gifted personnel who remain committed to excellence in the area of language development. To ensure that quality teachers are retained, an ‘Adopt a Teacher’ program will offer donors an opportunity to sponsor a teacher’s salary for a year. We need to continue investing in our personnel.
