Pupils exposed to careers in shipping
About 25 high schools recently took part in the second annual Maritime and Shipping Career Expo held at the Mdantsane Indoor Sports Centre.
The expo, this year themed “Recognising Air, Sea and Rail Transport”, was organised by the Youth Chamber of Shipping in Africa (YCSA) with the aim of exposing high school pupils to career opportunities in the maritime and shipping industry.
More than 1000 pupils were given the opportunity to interact with exhibitors like Grindrod and Transnet.
YCSA communications officer Nomvula Sikakane said:
“The chamber has seen a need to provide early access to this lucrative and exciting industry by opening up new frontiers.
“Through this exhibition we encourage pupils to pursue careers in the maritime, mining, rail and aviation arenas as there is a critical shortage of qualified professionals in these sectors.”
YCSA, based in KwaZulu-Natal, is a nonprofit organisation formed by six female directors who recognised the lack of focus in maritime studies.
The exhibition forms part of the chamber’s goal of reaching South Africa’s nine provinces by July next year.
