Movie Kaalgat Karel to start filming in East London in Feb
The exciting world of movie making is about to come alive in East London in 2020 and will go a long way to showcase our city to the rest of South Africa and hopefully even internationally.
Pre-production of the Afrikaans romantic comedy, Kaalgat Karel has started in East London with shooting starting on 5th February, and is the first of three films to be made in the Eastern Cape. Boondogle Films with support from the ECDC – Eastern Cape Development Corporation and Multichoice – kykNET / M-Net will be announcing the all-star cast on the eve of production – 4 February.
Boondogle Films (of Tess and ‘1994: the bloody miracle’) has gone into an exciting partnership for these three feature films with the highly-respected non-profit company, The SA Film Academy, to run a traineeship programme using all three films as an immersive training platform for 12 young people in the Eastern Cape. Each trainee will not only attend workshops with film professionals but be a part of the film crew, working and gaining experience in a specific department under the mentorship of one of the heads of department (cinematographer, production designer etc). The plan is to let trainees progress to more skilled positions on the next two films and bring new trainees on, on each film. Many of the skills imparted will be cross-sectoral and create different livelihood possibilities – not only in the film industry.
We believe that this programme will play a vital role in building up what is a burgeoning film industry in the Eastern Cape Province, one of South Africa’s poorest regions. As we all know, the very best way of learning is by doing, and we believe that this programme, across not one but three films, can leave a lasting legacy. – Boondogle Films
To help make this dream a reality Boondogle Films are looking for 12 sponsorships of R50K ($3482) each and are hoping that companies and even individuals (or groups of individuals) will step forward to help them implement this vision on the first of their slated films. Each sponsorship will cover one intern’s transport, accommodation near set, meals and stipend, for a period of 7 weeks, as well as covering part of the salary of the local trainer to oversee what is a unique and wonderful programme. All sponsorship will go directly into covering the costs of the programme, not the film itself.
Sponsorships would be made through the The SA FILM Academy, and since it is a PBO in South Africa under Section 18A will be TAX DEDUCTABLE.
Boondogle Films are hoping beyond hope that there are generous businesses or individuals out there who would consider coming on board and sponsoring a trainee (or two!).
What is more, there is the opportunity to offer loads of publicity in return for businesses – both in the press, in what will be an extensive social media campaign for the movie and even in terms of product placement in the movie itself.
If you or your company are interested in taking part in this fantastic opportunity, please email Paul Egan or Meg Rickards (paulcegan@gmail.com / megfrancesrickards@gmail.com).
