Court Crescent Recreational Park and Water World Fun Park
This week brings the much anticipated start of the development of the Court Crescent Recreational Park on the East London Beachfront, as well as the upgrade of the Water World Fun Park on the West Bank.
These two large tourism projects have come about as a result of a public participation process co-ordinated by the BCMDA (Buffalo City Metropolitan Development Agency), and will be undertaken over a period of 18 months. Both developments will occur concurrently.
The Court Crescent Recreational Park
The empty piece of land infront of the Hotel Osner, currently known as Court Crescent, will be converted into a public recreational park, which will greatly upgrade the East London beachfront. Catering for the general public, the Court Crescent Recreational Park will include an Open Air Theatre, a Tourism Centre, stalls for informal traders and new ablution facilities. The section of Esplanade Street from Moore Street to Court Crescent/Aquarium Road will be permanently closed to traffic, and will become pedestrianised. BCMDA are also looking at making the entire area a free Wi-Fi hotspot, once it has been completed.
Road Closures (partial)
- Moore Street (between the Windmill Roadhouse and Esplanade Road)
- Court Crescent (entry to Lighthouse Spar and Hotel Osner) between intersections of Moore Street and Aquarium Road.
- Access to John Bailie Road from Moore Street.
- Access to Longfellow Street, Aquarium Road and Esplanade Road – from Court Crescent.
Road Closures (permanent)
- Esplanade Road – section between intersections of Moore Street and Court Crescent.
- Court Crescent (adjacent to Hotel Osner) towards Esplanade Road and Moore Street.
The Water World Fun Park
The Water World Fun Park on the West Bank is also finally going to get a much needed upgrade over the same period. The upgrade will include new pools, an open air theatre, swings, lapa’s and braaing facilities. BCMDA will be constructing an alternative bypass around the Grand Prix Circuit to ensure that the racetrack and racing events are not affected during the renovation period.
BCMDA have apologised in advance for the inconvenience to the companies and those living around the affected areas. I am sure you will all join me in agreeing that it will be worth it in 18 months time!
